MARRIAGE

1General Rule

Registration of marriage is compulsory. All marriages must be registered at the Registry of Marriages. Please note that a religious ceremony alone does not amount to registration.

2Who can get married?


MALE
• Aged below 18 are not allowed to marry.
• Aged between 18 to 21 the parents must consent to the marriage.
• Aged 21 and above the consent of parent is not required.

FEMALE
• Aged below 16, are not allowed to marry.
• Aged between 16-18, the Chief Minister must consent to the marriage.
• Aged between 18 to 21 the parents must consent to the marriage.
• Aged 21 and above the consent of parent is not required.

3What happens if I do not register my marriage?

The parties will be considered as unmarried person and the child of the marriage will be considered as illegitimate child. They will not have any rights over the property/estate when either parties/parent(s) die. Furthermore, the parties are not eligible to seek nor to provide maintenance. However, the custody of the child (if any) will be given to the mother..
